This gorgeous little vintage polka dot jug was made by VEB Handlesleben, which was an East German factory. It has a stylish colour scheme of red, white and blue and stands about 14cm high. This little beauty is in very good condition with no chips or cracks. There is some crazing and an indentation under the glaze on the lip, which would have occured during manufacture.
Many of us know the story of the West German pottery factories that made all kinds of beautifully designed decorative pottery in the middle of the 20th Century. Fewer people know about the East German factories, but that is changing. The East Germans were also in the decorative pottery business in the 1950s-1980s and they had some very cool designs. The East German designs were often a little less crazy and a little more controlled in their colour schemes, but in many ways this made their designs perhaps a bit more stylish.
